Shaking up the flavours
March 05 2015
There was once a time when your choice of milkshake flavour was Chocolate or Vanilla - and if you were really lucky, Strawberry was also on the menu, bringing your number of options to a grand total of three.
But these days, anyone looking to treat themselves to a milkshake has a huge variety of flavours to choose from, ranging from indulgent Chocolate Fudge brownie to exotic Pina Colada.
Ice cream chain Baskin Robbins is famous for its rainbow of colourful flavours of the frozen treat. Any of the brand's ice creams can be turned into a milkshake, giving you tongue-tingling choices like Caramel Praline Cheesecake, Cotton Candy or Green Tea. Plus, since the shakes are made to order, customers can customise their drinks with any flavour combination.
Recently, US-based Sonic Drive-in restaurants have also upped their milkshake game with a number of limited-edition flavours. 25 of them, to be precise, with combinations that sound both mouth-watering and intriguing.
All made with the chain's famous real ice cream, the collection of shakes includes guest favourites like Strawberry Cheesecake and Peanut Butter Fudge. But there are also more unique combinations like Jalapeno Chocolate, Coconut Cream Pie and Chocolate Covered Banana.
Like Baskin Robbins, Sonic's made-to-order shake flavours can also be mixed up, giving customers full control of the taste experience.
"Our team of culinary experts always delivers innovative flavours to make the Sonic experience more exciting," said chef Claes Peterson, vice president of product innovation at Sonic Corp.
"Because each shake is hand-mixed to order, our team members can whip up any flavour the guest can think of. We hope guests will see these 25 flavours as a starting point - a canvas for them to create their own perfect shake masterpiece," he added.
Another way to mix up your ice cream shake flavours is with coffee. Dairy Queen's range of MooLattes is a perfect example, with options like Mocha, French Vanilla and Caramel. Each one is finished with a dollop of whipped cream and toppings include chocolate or caramel drizzles.
