Create The Ultimate Taco for Game Day

There are some days when people just want to eat simply, but well - occasions when the food is not the central attraction, but needs to be good and filling to enhance your enjoyment of a special occasion.

Game day is certainly one of those. Whether watching the Superbowl or another big football game, the hockey finals or an international event like the Olympics or Commonwealth Games, some good food and a nice drink makes the hours spent by the TV or in the stadium that much more fun.

Tacos are always a great way to do some food, before, during or after a game. Swift and apparently simple to make, yet incredibly versatile; all sorts of things can go into them, and as long as the combination is tasty and filling, it meets all the needs of the fan on game day.

For chefs, there is almost no limit to what you can put in a taco. This Mexican speciality predates the arrival of the Spanish, and in its original form it is believed the soft tortillas were used to wrap up fish. So, for example, if you went for a fishy themed taco you might produce something a bit novel now, but it would actually pay homage to the very earliest versions of this tasty treat.

Fish would certainly represent a novel change from the typical taco filling, which usually involves something like beef, lamb or duck. But why not go for something different? Seafood is a great way of doing this because you could mix in a few different things. Squid and octopus, different kinds of fish, crab and lobster meat, prawns or mussels are all examples of the sorts of unusual and novel ways you could spruce up a taco.

The same could be true of the vegetable aspects. Why just stick with familiar staples like beans, avocado and rice. Red peppers or celery, or fruits like lime and pineapple might just create new and incredibly novel combinations, especially for vegetarians.

How the food is prepared is another matter. Fast food taco outlets may have to throw things together in moments and put them in an oven, but restaurants with more preparation time can go the extra mile. Try flame-grilling steaks, adding peppercorns and marinating meat or fish in juices with lots of added spices. Mix things up more such as hummus or guacamole with cream cheese, and add in surprise extras - like going the full Florentina with a freshly-cooked egg.

Just as sports teams need to up their game and produce their best before a big match, so can anyone making a taco. It is easy to be lulled into complacency and do the same kind of thing time and again.

While many people will be happy with that, the sheer joy of tacos is the almost limitless scope for variety and experimentation. Just as a major sporting event can be won with a moment of brilliant innovation, so game day - and many other occasions - can be made that bit more special with brilliant new recipes or ingredients in a taco.
