8 ways to do something different with Guacamole

In its most basic form, guacamole is an extremely simple (but very tasty) dip that can be made by simply mashing up some avocado and adding other ingredients to enrich the flavor, like salt, lime juice, cilantro and jalapenos.

One of the best things about guacamole is the fact that it offers so much potential for experimentation. There are different ways to prepare it, and a practically endless array of ingredients you can add to it for new taste experiences.

Here are some of the many ways you can serve guacamole to delight your diners:

1. Grilled with cheese and basil

There aren't many foods that can't be improved with the addition of cheese, and that includes guacamole. Before mashing up your avocado, try halving and grilling it for a few minutes to bring out a new flavor, before serving with parmesan cheese, fresh basil and possibly some lemon for added zing.

2. Mixed with pasta

Given its Mexican heritage, guacamole might not seem the most obvious partner for pasta, but you might be surprised by how well these foods go together. This recipe shows how the taste and texture of avocado can be paired beautifully with pasta and shrimp, along with some extra flavorings like black pepper, paprika, garlic and onion powder.

3. With onion, tomato and chili

Sometimes, a few simple, fresh ingredients are all you need to make something truly tasty, not to mention healthy. Mashed avocado just has to be mixed with blended onions, tomato and chili to create a fabulous guacamole, which can be boosted with cilantro and lime for a perfect end result.

4. In an egg salad

There are many ways avocado can be combined with eggs to achieve something special. One option is to simply stir it in with some chopped, hard-boiled eggs, green leaves and other vegetables and seasonings of your choosing for a great egg salad. Or, you could use guacamole in place of mayonnaise in the traditional recipe for deviled eggs.

5. Enriched with tropical fruit

Once again, tropical fruit might not seem like the most obvious accompaniment to guacamole, but sometimes the most surprising combinations turn out to be the most effective. This recipe shows how the classic Mexican dip can be brought to life with the addition of pineapple and mango.

6. In a soup

Many food lovers have a soft spot for a good soup, especially when it provides them with a taste experience they have never encountered before. One of the best ways to incorporate the flavor of avocado into a soup is by offsetting it against spicy elements like Thai green curry paste and chili, as this recipe shows.

7. As a salsa

Guacamole and tomato salsa are frequently seen alongside each other, but mixing your mashed avocado with finely chopped onion, white wine vinegar, garlic, jalapenos and lime can create a combination of the two much-loved dips. The result could be the perfect combination for fajitas and other Mexican classics on your menu.

8. On burgers

Burgers are a timeless restaurant favorite, of course, but all too often they are simply offered with basic condiments like ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard. Incorporating guacamole into your range of burgers will offer diners a fresh, healthy option, particularly when it's combined with meats like low-fat turkey.
